The Three Amigos: Why it's all ClintObaMcain to me

The next president will likely either be Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton or John McCain. Isn't it nice to finally have a choice? A middle-aged black man, an older white woman, and an even older white man. Liberals and conservatives. Left and right. Finally, we have some genuine differences in policy to debate. Right?

Of course not.

Borderline Insanity: The U.S. has Iran mainly surrounded, but what about Turkmenistan?

Map of Iran

Iran has 3,300 miles of land bordering seven countries. By comparison, our southern border (the one we can't seem to control) extends 2,000 miles and only has Mexico on the other side. And it seems that we are doing everything we can to surround Iran.

Did Ron Paul Break Fox News? Indeed he may have -- if the South Carolina GOP was any indication

Two days before the New Hampshire primary, Fox News staged a forum for the Republican presidential candidates and invited everyone who was at the ABC debate the day before, except for Ron Paul. They introduced the forum by saying that the GOP nominee would be one of the five candidates who were there, a statement clearly meant to suggest that Ron Paul doesn't have a chance to win.

That may have been the straw that broke the camel's back, if the camel was an American populace growing increasingly impatient and frustrated with Faux News propaganda.

School Daze: If we thought about it, we'd realize we could, would and should throw out the public [mis]education system

Let's kick off the new year with some out-of-the-box thinking. What if we didn't have public education here in Fairfield County? What if we separated school and state and let education be entirely a private matter?

If you hadn't resolved to be more open-minded this year, you might have dismissed this as foolishness. After all, everybody knows without government we would all be illiterate bums. Privatizing education? Come on. It can't be done, people wouldn't do it even if they could, and it shouldn't be done even if people would.

Speed Limits: Speeding tickets have nothing to with highway safety-and everything to do with hidden taxes (of course)

Originally Published In:

We should not have speed limits on our largest highways, at least not in the left-most lane, and here's why.

Speed limits have virtually nothing to do with safety. People who speed are not necessarily unsafe, and unsafe drivers don't necessarily speed. In fact, it is already illegal to drive dangerously, regardless of what the posted speed limit is. If a cop thinks you are driving too fast, too slow, or too erratically for the conditions of the road at the time, then you can be charged with reckless driving.

YouScrewed: This is what happens when the candidates and their handlers are allowed to hijack the debate format

Last week's CNN/YouTube debate was one of the worst political debates I've ever seen. And I have some experience in debates: I debated Republican incumbent Chris Shays and Democrat Diane Farrell seven times last year when I was running for Congress. So, what makes a good debate?

Nowadays people think a declaration of independence needs to be followed immediately by a constitution. But our founding fathers had other priorities. On that same fateful day of July 4, 1776, the Journals of the Continental Congress reveal what was most pressing. "Resolved," it declared, "that Dr. Franklin, Mr. J. Adams, and Mr. Jefferson, be a committee, to bring in a device for a seal for the United States of America." First and foremost, we needed a corporate logo.

Don't Do the Math: Getting schooled on the limits of public education

Our state law requires children to be instructed in "reading, writing, spelling, English grammar, geography, arithmetic and United States history and in citizenship, including a study of the town, state and federal governments." (Conn. Gen. Stat. 10-184)

How hard is that, really?

Earlier this month, conservative author Ann Coulter said Jews need to be "perfected" into Christians. Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad routinely denies the Holocaust and says Israel needs to be "wiped off the map." Of Vanity Fair's recent "hundred most powerful people," more than half were Jewish when counted by the Jerusalem Post and checked by New York Magazine.

A Pleasurable Plummet: Commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Great Stock Market Crash of 1987

Do you remember where you were when the stock market crashed on Monday, October 19, 1987, plummeting more than 20 percent in a single day? What lessons have we learned two decades later? Can this sort of thing ever happen again?

I was 12 at the time, sitting in my eighth grade Social Studies class. When the clock ticked 9:32 a.m., the assistant principal poked his head in the room and pulled me out. This was well before cellphones and the internet and any other way of communicating other than calling the school with a message.
